Abstract
Astronomical Telescope on the Moon. It is desirable in connection with a Lunar International Laboratory to establish on the Moon an astronomical telescope which should either be fixed in relation to the Moon or else shifted at specified intervals according to the programme being implemented or the requirements of the observer. Owing to the physical movements of the Moon (libration, precession) it is possible in the course of a year, with a telescope fixed in relation to the Moon’s surface, to observe a certain belt of the star field. The axis of the telescope will describe a complicated trajectory of the star field. The setting of the telescope can subsequently be adjusted so as to cover the most interesting parts of the star field, the scanning of which will then be effected as a result of the natural rotation of the Moon.
It is extremely important to obtain television pictures of the galactic fields with different filters. For this purpose, the axis of the telescope is trained onto the appropriate zone of the sky; and its field of vision is traversed by a series of galaxies as a result of the rotation of the Moon itself. When the field of vision of the telescope is 15’, each galaxy can be observed on the screen for a period of 30 minutes.
The radiation of the planets can be registered practically through the full orbit, right up to positions very close to the Sun; the Sun’s disc, seen from the Moon, has no halo. In particular, it is possible to observe Venus in inferior conjunction with the Sun: in this case it is possible to follow the absorption of the Sun’s light in the upper strata of the atmosphere of Venus in different parts of the spectrum, up to and including very short wave lengths. This will provide extremely valuable data for ascertaining the structure and composition of the upper strata of the atmosphere of Venus.
