Abstract

The first clear statement of the principles of conformational analysis, as applied to cyclohexane derivatives, was made by Barton in 1950 (21). Since then conformational arguments have been invoked to deal with questions of relative stereochemistry throughout the whole realm of natural products. A previous review in this Series has discussed the application of conformational analysis to steroids and related natural products (24) and recently the numerous uses of this approach in the field of carbohydrate chemistry have been surveyed (61 a). The extension of conformational principles to nitrogen-containing molecules was an early development (43, 110), and alkaloids now constitute a great area of natural products which has been extensively investigated by the methods of conformational analysis.
