Local Mechanisms of Humoral Regulation During Aging

  • Chapter
Aging and Life-Prolonging Processes

Abstract

The self-regulation of the organism’s metabolism and functions is reahzed due to a complex hierarchy, i. e. to the subordination of its various levels to one another. The objects of regulation, namely, the organs and the tissues, are under the complicated neurohumoral control of the central nervous system. These higher forms of regulation were created on the basis of intracellular and intercellular regulatory factors during historic and individual development. However, the local regulatory mechanisms, which are of great adaptive importance in ensuring the adequate reactions of the cells, organs and tissues, did not lose any of their biological significance even though those forms were created. The interaction between the general and the local, and between the centralized and the local, is what determines the specific mechanisms of regulation.
