Abstract

In the present chapter, we shall discuss longitudinal oscillations of charges in a medium more closely, starting from an intiutive picture of what happens when a perturbation is activated in the medium. Due to the Coulomb interaction between charges, there will be a tendency to screen off any disturbance. This screening effect is intimately connected with the occurence of charge density waves. In the sequel we shortly discuss the influence of boundaries and eventually the response of the system to an external perturbation. The issue of a fast probe electron entering the medium is calculated in detail. We shall derive an important relation between the differential scattering cross section and the dielectric permittivity ε.
