Glucosylated Proteins in Normal and Diabetic Pregnancy

Abstract

As originally hypothesized (Peterson and Jones, 1977), the measurement of glycosylated proteins has been increasingly defined as a clinical tool and the role of these types of reactions in the protean sequelae of diabetes is under intense study. One of the major developments during the past year has been the convening of an “Expert Committee” under the auspices of the National Diabetes Data Group of the National Institutes of Health whose charge it is to standardize nomenclature and investigate the possibility of references and standards for glycosylated protein measurement. The recommended nomenclature is summarized in Table 54. The term glycation has also been introduced recently to implicate all nonenzymatic adducts of sugars with proteins and has some merit in its simplicity and specificity.
