Von einer Extremalaufgabe spricht man dann, wenn die Frage zu beantworten ist, ob eine gegebene Funktion überhaupt einen größten oder einen kleinsten Funktionswert liefern kann. Falls diese Frage positiv beantwortet wird, dann wird weiter danach gefragt, für welche Argumente (x-Werte oder x1-x2-…-xn-Kombinationen) sich diese globalen Extrema einstellen.
