Die Literatur zum Innovationsmanagement im Allgemeinen und den frühen Innovationsphasen im Speziellen haben sich insbesondere mit den Problemen und Erfolgsfaktoren im Bereich des produzierenden Gewerbes auseinandergesetzt. Hierbei standen größtenteils etablierte Industrien, wie z. B. die Maschinenbau- und Elektrotechnikindustrie, im Mittelpunkt des Interesses (siehe Beitrag von Verworn im 3. Teil dieses Buches). Im zunehmenden Maße finden sich allerdings auch High-Tech-Branchen als Untersuchungsgegenstand in der Innovationsforschung wieder.1 Eine Branche, die bisher in der Literatur zum Innovationsmanagement vernachlässigt worden ist, stellt die Biotechnologie dar. Bisherige betriebswirtschaftliche Untersuchungen konzentrierten sich hauptsächlich auf nationale wie regionale Unterschiede bei Unternehmensgründungen in der Biotechnologie-Branche.2 Forschungsarbeiten, die klären, inwieweit die Besonderheiten dieser Industrie—insbesondere in der frühen Innovationsphase—einen Einfluss auf die Ausgestaltung des Innovationsmanagements haben, fehlen aber bisher.
