Es steht weitgehend außer Frage, dass die zukünftige Wettbewerbsfähigkeit hochentwickelter Nationen maßgeblich von der Innovationsfähigkeit abhängt. Dabei wird es aus Sicht des betriebswirtschaftlichen Innovationsmanagements zunehmend wichtiger, technologische Potenziale umfänglich auszunutzen und zugleich eine an Marktanforderungen orientierte Leistungsentwicklung zu sichern. Nicht zuletzt aufgrund der zentralen Wettbewerbsbedeutung von Innovationen und ihrem hohen Fehlschlagrisiko (Cooper 2001) ist innerhalb der Innovationsforschung der Zweig der Erfolgsfaktorenforschung immer stärker in den Mittelpunkt des Interesses gerückt, was die große Zahl von Veröffentlichungen zu diesem Bereich verdeutlicht (für einen Überblick: Calantone/di Benedetto 1990; Brown/Eisenhardt 1995).
