Abstract

Turbine disk is an important part of a jet engine. It has been demonstrated by practice that the cracks were initiated frequently at the slot bottom in a turbine disk, but the crack propagation was slowly, when the engine was operated. There are some important questions which should be answered. That is, after the cracks are initiated in the turbine disk, whether the disk could be used continuously with safety. If it could be used, how long is the operating duration? For the application of damage tolerance concepts, it is necessary to estimate the number of load cycles required to propagate the crack from the initial size to the critical size. In this paper, we take the crack propagation and lifetime estimation of an existing turbine disk as an example. An estimation method of fracture mechanics combined with probability statistics is proposed.
