Abstract

Esophagectomy without thoracotomy was originally proposed by Denk in 1913 [1], and successfully performed in a patient with cancer of the thoracic esophagus by Gray-Turner in 1933 [2]. This procedure was virtually forgotten until the 1980s when Orringer reintroduced and popularized the transhiatal approach in patients with cancer of the thoracic esophagus [3, 4].
