Abstract
Patients with inoperable advanced esophageal carcinoma are treated with radiotherapy with or without chemotherapy. In general, the 5-year survival rate is about 10% or lower for the patients curatively irradiated. This poor result is caused by the low local control rate and the high incidence of regional recurrence and distant metastasis. In contrast, in the cases of early esophageal cancer, favorable results of radical radiotherapy have been obtained which are comparable to surgery. Radiotherapy has been used for the local treatment of advanced or medically inoperable esophageal cancer for a long time.
