In età pediatrica, così come negli adulti, la nutrizione parenterale (NP) può arrivare ad assumere il significato di “intestino artificiale” e determinare una vera e propria condizione di dipendenza in alcune circostanze croniche, in particolare nei casi in cui la nutrizione orale o enterale non consentono un adeguato apporto energetico. È proprio l’esistenza di tali situazioni che ha motivato la realizzazione di programmi domiciliari con équipe multidisciplinari cui partecipano medici, infermieri, farmacisti e assistenti sociali, allo scopo di migliorare la qualità di vita dei piccoli pazienti e delle loro famiglie.
