Abstract

Transabdominal ultrasound (US) Is employed In the screening, detection, differential diagnosis, staging, and follow-up of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs). Although there are well-known limitations in the use of ultrasounds to scan the gastrointestinal tract, US can assess the primary site of growth of GISTs as well as their metastasis to the liven Gray-scale US, color-power-Doppler techniques, and contrast-enhanced US (CEUS) are all useful modalities employed to assess the GIST patient. US can help in detecting GIST masses, particularly as incidental findings or in patients with atypical clinical presentation. Doppler techniques are employed to demonstrate the presence and degree of vascularization in gastrointestinal masses and liver metastases. CEUS is particularly useful in the early assessment of response to treatment of patients with hepatic metastasis.
