Riassunto
I deficit cognitivi vengono attualmente considerati un sintomo fondamentale della schizofrenia (Heinrichs e Zakzanis, 1998). È noto che tali disfunzioni cognitive costituiscono un fattore predittivo negativo del funzionamento sociale e lavorativo del soggetto, oltre che della qualità di vita, e un fattore limitante il successo degli interventi riabilitativi psicosociali (Alptekin et al., 2005; Green et al., 2000; Milev et al., 2005). Per tali considerazioni, il trattamento dei deficit cognitivi è divenuto un target rilevante nella terapia della schizofrenia. Gli interventi di tipo farmacologico si sono dimostrati in grado di migliorare solo parzialmente la componente cognitiva della schizofrenia: in particolare gli antipsicotici di prima generazione hanno dimostrato un impatto per lo più negativo, mentre gli antipsicotici di nuova generazione hanno rivelato una capacità solo modesta di migliorare le funzioni cognitive (Davidson et al., 2009; Mortimer et al., 2007; Woodward et al., 2005).
