Het doel van de medische behandeling van osteoporose is vermindering van het risico op een eerste of volgende fractuur bij patiënten met een verhoogd absoluut fractuurrisico. Bijkomende extraskeletale voordelen zijn een toename van de kwaliteit van leven, een verminderd valrisico en afname van de mortaliteit.
