Abstract

In the Bolivian rural areas peasant households participate in different organisational forms. In this chapter these different forms, their functions in the agricultural production systems and the household economy, and how development organisations relate to them will be analysed. Research was carried out in villages in the north of the departments of Chuquisaca and Potosí, considered one of the poorest and most backward areas of Bolivia. The main organisational forms encountered in the research area are informal networks for the exchange of resources such as land, labour and capital; village-level organisations and village authorities; and economic farmers’ organisations like producers’ associations and cooperatives.

Notes

  1. 1.

1The project was implemented by a multidisciplinary team of Bolivian and Dutch researchers from January 1995 to April 1997. The research was funded by the Dutch ministry of development cooperation and carried out by the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) and the consultancy firm SUR. The project resulted in two books (Zoomers (comp.) 1998, and Zoomers 1999).

  2. 2.

In terms of agroecological circumstances, market access, farming systems and the presence of development organisations.

  3. 3.

Within villages benefits of projects are unevenly distributed. The most favoured persons are relatively well-to-do middle-aged males, with a relatively high level of education and experience as a board member (in the village organisation).

  4. 4.

The implications for the exchange networks and the economic farmers’ organisations were less clear.

  5. 5.

    OTBs: Organizaciones Territoriales de Base

  6. 6.

Although the easily accessible OTBs benefit relatively more than the less accessible OTBs (Nijenhuis 2002; Torres 1998).
