Heidegger’s Phenomenology of being and Husserl’s Phenomenology of Consciousness

Abstract

When Heidegger entered the theological faculty of the University of Freiburg in the winter semester of 1909–1910, he borrowed a copy of Husserl’s early epoch-making work Logical Investigations (1900–1901) from the university library and read it over and over during the following years (SD 82).1 Why did he begin to read it? According to him, during the summer of 1907, while he was still in high school, Konrad Graeber, a friend of his father at that time and a great bishop of Freiburg afterwards, had presented him with a work by Brentano entitled On the Several Senses of Being in Aristotle (1862), which had awakened him to the question of being (US 92; VW 398). Well aware that Brentano had been a teacher of Husserl, whose philosophical thought had been influenced by that of his teacher, upon entering university, Heidegger began to read Husserl’s famous work, expecting to be enlightened much more on the question of being (US 92; SD 82).
