Asymmetric Diels—Alder reactions

  • Chapter
Advanced Asymmetric Synthesis

Abstract

Since the first examples were carried out,1 the Diels—Alder reaction has become one of the corner stones of organic synthesis, in large part because of the ability to construct up to four new asymmetric centres in one reaction. Early attempts2 at accomplishing asymmetric Diels—Alder reactions were poor compared with contemporary examples, but the seeds of success had been sown, and in the intervening years the number of examples of Diels—Alder reactions occurring with good to high levels of asymmetric induction has increased almost exponentially. The advances made in asymmetric Diels—Alder reactions have been the subject of many general reviews,3−8 with catalysis of asymmetric Diels—Alder reactions receiving particular attention.9−13 The aim of this chapter is to survey some of the more important recent advances in the area of asymmetric Diels—Alder reactions, with particular emphasis on applications and future developments.
