Immunizations

  • Chapter
Pediatric Dialysis

Abstract

The care of children maintained on chronic dialysis is complex, and often requires the involvement of a multi-disciplinary team compromised of pediatric nephrologists, pediatric surgeons, pediatric dialysis nurses, nutritionists, social workers and behavioral psychologists. Unfortunately, because the care of these children is so complex, delivery of routine well-child care, including immunizations, can be delayed or overlooked. It is imperative, therefore, that all those who care for pediatric dialysis patients remain abreast of the recommended childhood immunization schedule, which is updated each year by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), the Committee on Infectious Diseases of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP)1. In addition, the potential for abnormal response to vaccination in pediatric dialysis patients should be recognized, so that appropriate monitoring can be performed. Finally, care providers should be aware that pediatric dialysis patients may be candidates for special supplemental vaccinations. This chapter will review the current standard childhood immunization schedule as well as supplemental vaccines needed for children on dialysis.
