Neurological side effects of dialysis and cognitive development in children with end-stage renal disease

Abstract

Whereas the literature regarding the neurological of uremia and its treatment in children is scarce, a large body of published literature indicates delayed neuro-development in infants with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The biochemical abnormalities underlying central nervous system dysfunction have been reviewed1. Regarding the neurodevelopmental outcome of young children on dialysis we refer to the recent study by Warady et al. 2. The effect of renal transplantation on cognitive outcomes was recently discussed by Qvist et al. 3.
