Abstract

One cannot doubt that Churches in Malawi have played a significant role in promoting education system in the country. This has been so due to their Christian belief. Christians believe that God creates human beings with ability to learn, teach, and know and that God is active in and through education. It is their belief that the Church has been given the distinctive mandate to educate to instruct, form, and bring forth faithful, courageous, and wise disciples and reliable citizens. The purpose of this chapter is to outline historical aspects of the influence of protestant churches on public education in Malawi; the chapter will discuss some historical aspects only and not the analysis on the impact. In addition, the chapter will also discuss some challenges facing the education system in Malawi and what Protestant churches are doing to address those challenges. Many churches believe that supporting education system is part of calling and they are fulfilling that calling.
