What Have We Learned from Our Research? Making Sense of the Impact of Protestant Religiosity on the Academic Achievement of Urban Latina/o Youth

Abstract

This chapter describes the dual impact of Protestant religiosity on the academic achievement of urban high school Latina/o youth. The youth we interviewed for this study suggest that active membership in a faith-based organization enhances the relationships they have with college-going adults who attend the same church. In turn, these adults provide youth with important advice, such as college enrollment strategies and navigating adolescence. Additionally, these youth also spoke about the extent to which their belief in God compelled them to do well in school. Implications for urban education and Latina/o youth are also discussed within the scope of these findings.
