The Ribulose Monophosphate (Quayle) Cycle: News and Views

  • Chapter
Microbial Growth on C1 Compounds

Abstract

Over 30 years ago the elegant radioisotopic experiments by Quayle and his colleagues have led to a discovery of the novel metabolic pathway, the ribulose monophosphate (RuMP) cycle. Further enzymic studies confirmed its operation in many obligately and facultatively methylotrophic bacteria of different taxonomic position. A detailed presentation of four possible variants of this cycle has been reviewed elsewhere (Quayle, 1980). This paper briefly describes a new variant of the RuMP cycle coupled with pyrophosphate-dependent 6-phosphofructokinase (PPi-PFK) and its operation in Type (obligate methanotrophs. Current state and future prospects for our studies on the metabolic role of inorganic pyrophosphate (PPi) in aerobic methylotrophs are also discussed.
