Abstract
In Chapter 7 we neglected the effect of collisions, except to note that in the dHvA effect they would broaden the energy levels and hence diminish the signal. But in determining the transport properties of metals and semiconductors — for example their electrical and thermal conductivities σ and K — collisions are all-important; if there were no collisions, the relaxation time τ would be infinite, and so therefore would σ and K.
