Doppler ultrasonography in the follow-up of malignant melanoma of the choroid

Part of the book series: Documenta Ophthalmologica Proceedings Series ((DOPS,volume 53))

Summary

The sensitivity of modern pulsed duplex-scanners has been experimentally proven to be sufficient for measurements of flow velocity in the central retinal vessels. Clinical examinations were performed in 158 eyes with various diseases, including 27 malignant melanomas of the choroid. In vascular disturbancies the findings did not show significant deviations from the normal values.

In almost all malignant choroidal melanomas Doppler signals could be detected within the tumour. In the ultrasonographic follow-up conservatively treated melanomas Doppler examinations provided valuable additional information, when the findings before, directly after and four to six months after beta-irradiation were compared.
