Inoculation with associative N2-fixers in Egypt

Nitrogen Fixation with Non-Legumes

Part of the book series: Developments in Plant and Soil Sciences ((DPSS,volume 35))

Abstract

This paper reviews our work on biofertilization in Egyptian soils which are rich in asymbiotic N2-fixers. Several investigators have reported a positive effect of inoculation with Azotobacter and Azospirillum on cereals and other crops: this could be attributable to nitrogen fixation and formation of growth-promoting substances (indoles and gibberellins). Seed bacterization proved to be better than soil or phyllosphere inoculation techniques, and organic matter addition enhanced Azotobacter and Azospirillum proliferation. In pot experiments with only half the normal field rate of inorganic N-fertilizer, inoculation with asymbiotic N2-fixers and endomycorrhizae in the presence of rock phosphate gave a wheat crop of high straw and grain yield. Moreover, this beneficial effect extended to onion or millet cultivated after the wheat in the same pots. Inoculation with associative N2-fixers enhanced the rate of infection by indigenous endomycorrhizae and earlier panicle initiation. Several inoculant carriers were employed. Field application of our work might save about 50% of the cost of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers.
