Theoretical Aspects of the Earth Rotation

Part of the book series: Astrophysics and Space Science Library ((ASSL,volume 154))

Abstract

The motion of the Earth is composed of an orbital motion of the centre of mass around the Sun and a rotational motion about figure axes passing through this centre of mass. Both the orbital motion and the rotational motion determine the fundamental reference frames. Both motions are permanently perturbed by gravitational attractions and torques of other members of the solar system, and the orbital motion disturbs the rotational motion and also the rotational motion disturbs the orbital motion, which is very small but is now detectable by high accuracy observations.
