Surface shifts in core level energies of transition metal carbides and nitrides

Abstract

The existence of surface shifts in core level binding energies of transition metal carbide and nitride surfaces is reviewed in this article. The shifts are of interest since they can provide information about the surface electronic properties of materials and, if large enough, can be used as probes of surface properties and reactions. Since no ab initio calculations of surface shifts for these compounds yet exist, the experimental results are compared with those predicted using a simple thermochemical model. That the surface shifts are large enough for a variety of surface investigations is shown and exemplified. Interesting possibilities for the future are discussed.
