Abstract

On 6th March 1987 the British vessel Herald of Free Enterprise, the pride of the Townsend Thoresen ferry fleet, sank outside the Belgian port of Zeebrugge with the loss of 188 lives. Only luck prevented the loss of all 539 on board. The ship had sailed with its bow doors open, and the sea had flooded in when the ship built up speed.
