Abstract
Chemo-electrical conversion is quite obvious in the case of excitable cells, which generate transient electric currents in response to stimuli. However it occurs — though in less spectacular forms — in all living cells, which maintain, at the expense of chemical metabolic energy, steady electric potential differences between the compartments separated by membranes.
