Abstract

Results are presented for an experimental investigation of the effects of premixed combustion on the accuracy and data rate of laser Doppler velocimeter measurements within a reciprocating engine. The question of interest is whether refractive index gradients at the boundaries of the burned gas region significantly defocus, deflect, or phase shift the incident laser beams, thereby disturbing the probe volume. It is shown that combustion has a negligible effect on both mean velocity and turbulence measurements, but can seriously degrade the signal quality, and thus the data rate. It is also shown that water condensation is a serious problem when a sapphire window is used, as compared to fused silica, and that the use of a laser line interference filter will significantly improve the data rate obtained from the burned gas region.
