Abstract
Mac Baldridge, former secretary of commerce, once introduced me as “our guy in the Commerce Department who makes up our economic numbers.” That story got around for a while, but, of course, I don’t “make up” census figures, or the GNP numbers, or a lot of other statistics that we report.
Robert Ortner was undersecretary of commerce for economic affairs under President Regan. He had previously served as the department’s chief economist.
