Abstract

In order to interpret the measurements of cosmogenic isotope concentrations in various terrestrial archives it is important to understand their production by nuclear reactions induced by the galactic cosmic rays in the atmosphere. In this paper the global production rates of 10Be and 36C1 are calculated using ahadronic cascade model. Primary cosmic ray flux variations due to heliomagnetic and geomagnetic modulation and the resulting changes of the 10Be and 36C1 production rates are discussed and compared with 14C variations. Several simple approximations describing the relationship between production rate, a solar activity parameter and geomagnetic dipole moment are given. The accuracy of the developed model is estimated by analysing the main uncertainties, and possible future improvements are proposed.
