Abstract

About twelve or thirteen years ago I stood here in Uppsala and delivered a lecture entitled ‘My Life Among the Phosphates’. Some years later I escaped from the Phosphates and returned to civilization where I undertook other sorts of activities somewhat more biological in nature than before. Now the organizers of this conference have asked me to do something that is virtually impossible, and that is to summarize research in aquatic phosphorus up to the 1970’s. No one in their right mind would really try to do that in detail and, as I believe I am in my right mind, despite my years among the Phosphates, I will not try it either. What I propose to do, however, is to try and trace what I feel have been the highlights of research in the aquatic aspects of phosphorus.
