Abstract

The introduction and widespread use of antibiotics has resulted in profound changes in the number and character of infections that are encountered. This was already evident in the sixties (22, 15). Although the problem of staphylococcal infections still received considerable attention and emphasis from many workers in the early sixties, several groups of workers, including ourselves, became impressed by the increasing prevalence and seriousness of infections with Gram-negative bacilli (2). The great majority of these infections were seen in immuno-compromised patients (2,4). This led us to investigate this type of infections in an animal model, particularly with regard to prophylaxis of such infections.
