Abstract

Senegal has a population of six million people. Despite the rapid growth of urban centres, the county remains largely rural, with 75% of the people living in rural areas. Access to electricity is mainly confined to large population centres in the west of the country, leaving nearly 13,000 villages (of less than 1,000 inhabitants) without power supply. For this reason Senegal has been extensively involved in the development of renewable energy sources. In December 1984 Spain and Senegal signed a Cooperation Contract to investigate the feasibility of using pv systems to supply energy for basic rural communities in Senegal and to build a photovoltaic installation in a Senegalese village.
