Vibrational Spectroscopy of Melts

Molten Salt Chemistry

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 202))

Abstract

Various aspects of the study of the vibrational spectrum of a molten salt are reviewed. The emphasis is on the application of absorption, emission, reflection IR spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Firstly, two different topics are considered: 1)the experimental techniques necessary to obtain a vibrational spectrum of a high temperature, often highly corrosive, molten salt;2)the main information one can obtain from a vibrational study of a melt. Finally, various examples of spectra of high, medium and low temperature molten haloaluminates are presented, showing the applicability of vibrational spectroscopy for the identification of equilibria between different species.
