Abstract
Bone bonding can develop at the surface of appropriate reactive materials (e.g. Bioglass (R) (1), glass ceramic (1–6), calcined bone (7)) and can biomechanically produce tensile strength. Since these materials display poor mechanical properties, they can not be used as bulk implants. There were some attempts to overcome this disadvantage by coating smooth, metal or ceramic surfaces with these materials directly (8) or using an intermediate layer, e.g. enamel, and inserting the surface reactive material as particles. Some problems related to these types of coatings have already been discussed (9,10, 7).
