The Flow Chart Expansion Method of the Design Problem

  • Chapter
Cybernetics and Systems ’86

Abstract

The flow chart expansion method helps the designer to examine the design problem from many aspects. It is an heuristic method useful in the initial stages of the design process. The concept of the chart expansion has certain features in common with systems concepts, although it differs from them in many specific ones. The method allows the designer to look at the problem as broadly as his skills and knowledge permit, without constraining his imagination by rules, regulations and other requirements. The concept emphasizes, in particular, the freest possible, unlimited examination of the problem and the simplicity and ease in obtaining a picture of a given area of reality. The graphic form accepted automatically makes it possible to arrange a picture that is sufficiently clear to create a logical and simulataneously simple and visual construction.
