Abstract

The discovery of the insecticidal activity of benzoylphenyl ureas pointed to new pathways in insect control strategies. The first commercial compound, diflubenzuron, disrupts the molting process, thereby serving as an insect growth regulator (Mulder and Gijswijt, 1973; Verloop and Ferrell, 1977; Marks et al., 1982). Studies of the mode of action of diflubenzuron [1-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-(2,6-difluorobenzoyl)urea] revealed that the compound alters cuticle composition in insects, especially that of chitin (Ishaaya and Casida, 1974; Post et al., 1974; Sowa and Marks, 1975), thereby affecting the elasticity and firmness of the endocuticle (Grosscurt, 1978a; Grosscurt and Anderson, 1980). As the dietary diflubenzuron concentration is increased, the amount of cuticle chitin in the house fly larvae is progressively reduced without any appreciable effect on the cuticle protein level; thus, the protein chitin ratio increases from 3.4 in normal larvae to 14.3 in 2.5-ppm-treated larvae. This alteration could well affect the biophysical and biochemical characters of the glycoprotein, the main constituent of the endocuticle (Ishaaya and Casida, 1974). The reduced level of chitin in the cuticle seems to result from inhibition of biochemical processes leading to chitin formation (Post et al., 1974; Hajjar and Casida, 1979; Van Eck. 1979).
