Abstract
The foregoing stand types have been defined on the basis of samples recorded in semi-natural stands growing on ancient woodland sites which have been managed (or treated) as coppice. Together they span the site dimension of variation, whilst differences due to management (and time; Chapter 10) have been minimised. Man has, of course, had a considerable effect on their composition (Section 3.5), but this is believed to be a relatively insignificant determinant of the differences between stand types.
