Abstract

Nutrients such as ammonia and phosphates, coming mainly from secondary urban effluents from aerobic treatment, are generally recognized as principal source of eutrophication of surface and coastal waters. As more stringent regulations on nutrient discharge are being implemented, specific treatment to abate nutrients from sewage are applied worldwide, such as precipitation of phosphates and biological nitrification-denitrification of ammonia.
