Abstract

Is there really a problem about the logic and semantics of definite descriptions, or the-phrases, as we shall also call them? There is in fact a perspective in which the last word on the subject was very nearly said by Bertrand Russell in his theory of descriptions (Russell 1905 (reprinted in Lackey 1973); Klemke 1970). Even though Russell’ theory needs further development in any case, this perspective deserves serious attention.
