Abstract
My first contact with cosmic rays dates from the year 1929 when I did some work with a cloud chamber built by D. Skobelzyne in the laboratory of Madame Curie, the Institute of Radium. The cloud chamber was placed in a magnetic field, not very strong, but which was sufficient for the study of the energy of radio active rays: This was, in fact, the aim of Skobelzyne, and enabled him to publish a number of results in this field. However, from time to time, straight tracks were present in addition to the curved tracks, and we concluded that they were due to electrons of very high energy. As they were always rather close to a vertical direction we recognized in these high energy electrons the so-called cosmic radiation or “high altitude radiation” discovered by Hess with an ionization chamber (Auger and Skobelzyne, 1929).
