Abstract

Taking of drugs by individuals, and prescribing of drugs by doctors, are normal and inevitable activities. They occur in all societies and in all countries. At any time and on any day probably 60 per cent of the population are taking medicinal drugs. Kohn and White, op. cit. (1976) found this rate in 12 developed countries (Figure 1). Of these one-half will be drugs prescribed by doctors and one-half self-medicated by purchasing medicines ’over the counter’ (OTC).
