Abstract

All nevocellular nevi present at birth are designated congenital. Those which appear during the first days, weeks and months of life are defined acquired nevi (1,3,6,23,26). In most cases we are dealing with a single pigmented lesion of varying size, occasionally hairy and exhibiting a papillomatous surface. Congenital nevi are present in approximately 1% of newborns. Most lesions are larger than 1,5 cm in diameter. Although a sexual prevalence is not shown, there are grounds to believe familial occurrence plays a role. Congenital nevocellular nevi form during the embryonic period. This can be deduced with certainty from nevi development around the eyelids. The eyelids are formed during the 4th to 5th week of embryonic development. During the 8th and 9th week a groove running diagonally across the lids develops, separating the lids. This process is completed by the 28th week of pregnancy. Thus nevi found in this area must be present no later than this period (25).
