Abstract

The prevailing hypothesis concerning metal toxicity towards phytoplankton is that a given free metal ion activity causes a certain toxic effect. This has been shown by phytoplankton toxicity experiments in synthetic media (Davey et al. 1973, Sunda & Guillard 1976, Anderson & Morel 1978) and in humic localities (Gächter et al. 1978, Sunda & Lewis 1978, Gjessing 1980, Toledo et al. 1980, Sedlacek et al. 1983, Laegreid et al. 1983). Therefore it is inferred that biotests can be used as a method for measuring the metal complexing capacity in natural waters in general.
