The Effect of Natural Complexing Agents on Heavy Metal Toxicity in Aquatic Plants

  • Chapter
Complexation of trace metals in natural waters

Part of the book series: Developments in Biogeochemistry ((DBGC,volume 1))

Abstract

Large amounts of organic substances, such as fulvic and phenolic acids may occur in surface waters, either dissolved or in collodial form (De Haan 1972a, b; Reuter and Perdue 1977; Lawrence 1980). These substances will influence the speciation of heavy metals in waters aside from pH-dependent processes (Stumm and Morgan 1970; Wagemann and Barica 1979). Due to the interaction of metal speciation with bioavailability the effect of several natural complexing agents have been tested on growth of and uptake of Zn and Cu by Elodea nuttallii.
