A Relativistic Approach to the Kepler Problem

Abstract

The classical Kepler problem can be modified so that the velocity is always bounded. This is done by using a new time variable. A new Hamiltonian function can also be constructed, and it receives a relativistic interpretation: Newtonian mass and energy are replaced by relativistic (proper) mass and energy. A classical model for the photon can also be given. On the other hand the reformulated Kepler problem can equally well be used in special relativity as a model for a relativistic particle in a gravitational field.
