Abstract
In this introduction I apologize for being unashamedly nationalistic, for while open heart surgery is very properly a worldwide affair and is particularly the result of North American skill, determination and investment, we in Britain can claim a useful share in its pioneering, particularly in regard to cardiopulmonary bypass and anaesthesia. If we take our starting-point from the first clinical use of a heart-lung machine by Clarence Dennis and others in 19511, you will note that Britain is represented by the sixth recorded case in the world and the fourth survivor (Table 1).
